Dismissing Gran Turismo as a game rather than a simulator has been the standard position in sim racing for twenty years, and it has been wrong for at least the last five. The specific things it teaches are narrower than a PC simulator teaches, but within that range they transfer completely.
What the racing AI changed
The strongest argument for taking the console simulator seriously is the opponent. Polyphony Digital developed GT Sophy in partnership with Sony AI and Sony Interactive Entertainment, and version 2.1 arrived on 27 March 2025 with update 1.57. It is available on 19 tracks across three regions: 5 in the Americas, 10 in Europe and 4 in Asia-Oceania.
What matters is not that the AI is fast but that it races. Version 2.1 extended it from preset quick race events to custom races, so a driver can set tyre wear and fuel consumption, choose individual opponents and stage one make races from their own garage. That turns the AI from a demonstration into a practice partner you can configure.
For a driver learning racecraft, that is the missing piece that offline practice normally lacks. Practising alone teaches lines and braking points; practising against opponents that defend, make mistakes and leave a gap teaches the thing that actually decides results.

What genuinely transfers
Racecraft transfers completely. Judging a closing speed, deciding whether a gap will still be there in two seconds, and holding a line under pressure are skills of perception and decision, and they do not care which physics engine produced the picture.
Circuit knowledge transfers almost completely. A corner sequence learned on one simulator is recognisable on another, and the reference points, the camber and the order of events stay the same. What changes is where exactly you brake, and that is quicker to relearn than the layout itself.
Race discipline transfers entirely, and it is the most undervalued of the three. Finishing races, managing fuel and tyres and staying out of incidents are habits rather than reflexes, and a driver who has built them on a console arrives on PC with them intact.
Where it stops
Pedal feel does not transfer, and it is the largest gap. Console setups often lack a load cell brake, and a driver who has learned braking through pedal travel has to learn it again through pressure. This is a hardware limit rather than a software one, and it closes as soon as the pedals change.
The last part of the limit does not transfer either. Console simulators generally model the approach to the limit convincingly and the behaviour past it less so, which means a driver arrives on a PC simulator well prepared for everything except the recovery from a slide.
And setup work transfers only partially. The vocabulary carries over, but a simulator that models tyre temperature across a stint asks different questions from one that models it more simply.
Using it deliberately
Treat it as the racecraft simulator and use a PC simulator for the limit. That division makes both better: an evening of custom races against configurable opponents builds decision making, and an evening of hot laps on a load cell builds the braking that the console cannot teach.
And use the AI as a training load rather than as an opponent to beat. Setting tyre wear and fuel consumption in a custom race produces a stint where the car changes underneath you, which is the closest thing to endurance practice available without a PC.
