Consistency training: the unglamorous drill that wins races, why the fastest lap is the wrong target and how to measure progress in a way that does not lie.

In a 40 lap race, a driver two tenths slower with half the variation finishes ahead of the fast one almost every time. That is arithmetic rather than opinion, and it is the reason the most valuable practice session is also the most boring one.
The arithmetic of variation
Take two drivers over 40 laps. The first averages 1:30.0 with a spread of two tenths; the second is capable of 1:29.8 but averages 1:30.4 because a third of the laps include a small mistake. Over the race the first finishes 16 seconds ahead, and the second spends the whole afternoon explaining that they are faster.
The spread also decides whether you can race at all. A driver whose braking point moves by two tenths between laps moves it by 11 metres at 200 km/h, and that is more than the gap a car alongside leaves you. Consistency is not a virtue in wheel to wheel racing, it is the entry requirement.
And it compounds with the licence systems. Race incidents are counted, and the driver who collects them cannot enter the events where the racing is good. Consistency is therefore the mechanism that unlocks the content, not just the results.

The drill that actually works
Drive twenty laps at 95 per cent and record every lap. The goal is not a fast lap, it is a set of twenty laps within two tenths of each other, and almost nobody manages it on the first attempt. The number that matters is the spread between your fastest and your slowest, not the average.
Then drive the same twenty laps with one change: pick a single corner and drive it deliberately slowly, and see whether the rest of the lap holds together. A driver whose consistency depends on rhythm loses it as soon as one corner breaks the pattern, and that is exactly what traffic does to you in a race.
Finally, drive twenty laps with a full fuel load and then twenty with a low one. A car that is consistent at one fuel level and inconsistent at another is telling you that your references are tied to the balance rather than to the track, and that is a fixable problem.
What consistency actually is
It is not doing the same thing every lap. Conditions change: the track rubbers in, the fuel burns off, the tyres wear, and a driver repeating identical inputs gets different results by lap twenty. Real consistency is producing the same output from changing inputs, which is a harder and more useful skill.
It is also not slowness. The drill runs at 95 per cent because that is where the reference points are stable, but the target is to raise that percentage until 95 per cent of your pace and your race pace are the same number. Drivers who practise only at 100 per cent never build the layer underneath.
And it is measurable in one number: the standard spread of your laps in a stint. Under two tenths is race ready, two to five tenths is workable, and over half a second means your fast lap is an accident rather than a capability.
Where the practice pays back
In the last third of a race. Everybody is consistent for ten laps, and the field spreads out over the following thirty because fatigue, fuel and tyre wear amplify small differences. A driver who has practised at 95 per cent for forty laps has a floor under them that a driver who has only practised hot laps does not.
And in traffic, where a lap is never clean. The ability to lose two tenths behind a slower car and pick the rhythm straight back up is entirely built in this drill, and it is invisible until the race where it decides the result.
