A qualifying setup is optimised for one lap with an empty tank and fresh tyres; a race setup is optimised for the fortieth lap with neither. The gap between those two cars is larger than most drivers expect, and knowing which one you need is a strategy decision rather than an engineering one.

What actually differs

Fuel is the first and largest difference. A car carrying 60 kg less fuel sits lower, rolls less and has different ideal tyre pressures, because the guide states that ideal pressure is determined by the load the tyre carries and higher pressures handle higher loads better. A race pressure on an empty tank is simply the wrong pressure.

Wing is the second. A qualifying lap has no slipstream to gain and nobody to defend from, so more downforce is close to free; a race adds both, and the same wing that was fastest alone makes you a target on every straight.

Put the trade in numbers. A qualifying setup might be worth 3 tenths over 1 lap, which is 1 or 2 grid positions in a field covered by 1 second. A race setup that is 1 tenth better over 40 laps is 4 seconds, which is more than 2 grid positions on almost any circuit. The only case where the 3 tenths wins is where overtaking costs more than 4 seconds, and that is a property of the track rather than of the car.

And the balance target is different in kind. A qualifying car can be nervous because it only has to work for two minutes on tyres that are at their best. A race car has to be drivable when the tyres are worn, the fuel is low and you are two hours into a stint with somebody alongside.

What a grid position is actually worth

It depends almost entirely on the circuit. Where overtaking is easy, starting third rather than first costs a few laps of catching up; where it is hard, it can cost the race. The honest way to decide how much qualifying pace to chase is to count the overtakes in the last three races at that circuit rather than to assume.

Count the minutes as well. A qualifying session is 2 laps that matter out of maybe 10 driven, against a race of 40 laps, so the qualifying car is the one you drive for about 3 minutes out of 90. Spending 50 per cent of your practice on 3 per cent of your driving is the part of the trade nobody states out loud.

It also depends on the field. In a race where the top ten are within half a second, qualifying decides the order for the first stint; in one where they are spread over three seconds, the race sorts itself out by lap ten regardless.

And it depends on the rules. Where a series enables a tyre compound change requirement, every participant must pit and complete a full race lap on at least two different dry compounds or be disqualified, which guarantees a mid race shuffle and reduces what the grid position buys.

When one setup is the right answer

In most club racing, one setup is correct and the reason is time. A driver with two free evenings a week who splits them between a qualifying setup and a race setup has half as much practice in each, and the resulting inconsistency costs more than the grid position gained.

The exception is where the two are genuinely far apart: high fuel races on circuits where downforce matters, or series with a compulsory pit stop that changes the fuel load dramatically. There, running the race setup in qualifying costs perhaps three tenths and the alternative costs a stint of poor pace.

The practical compromise is a single setup with two adjustments made in the pits: tyre pressures for the fuel load, and brake bias. Both are quick, both are the settings most sensitive to fuel, and neither requires you to learn a different car.

Building the race setup first

Always build the race setup first and derive the qualifying version from it, never the reverse. A race setup that is stable at high fuel usually needs only pressures and a little less wing to become a qualifying setup; a qualifying setup made stable enough to race is a rebuild.

And test the race setup at race fuel from the start. The guide's advice about one change at a time applies here with the fuel load as a fixed condition: a session run at qualifying fuel tells you about a car you will drive for two minutes out of ninety.
